The form of Lord Shiva is supernatural and unique. One of His distinguishing features is that, unlike other deities, His ornaments and attire are quite unusual. Among these another one is Ganga on Shiva’s head. So, Shiva is known as Gangadhar, meaning “bearer of Ganga.” The River Ganga flowing from Shivas head means knowledge spreading from the Divine; knowledge that purifies our soul.
Knowledge is liberating, knowledge brings freedom, knowledge is purifying. Knowledge is also movement; motion. The Ganga is known for its purity. When it flows from Shiva’s head, it symbolises the awakening of the Crown Chakra. According to Yogis, there are seven main centres in the body. Final liberation involves awakening of the Centre in the Crown. This is called Sahasrara. Upon awakening, the Yogi is One with the Self, thereby becoming the source of Purity. The beautiful form of Lord Shiva is full of Yogic symbolism! When Ganga was to descend on Earth it had such a vigorous flow that it could destroy the Earth. So Shiva locked her up in his hair and controlled it’s flow to save the Mother Earth.
So one symbolism is Anything that is turbulent, uncontrollable, that can be brought under control by the Great Lord Mahadev, every restless being becomes peaceful ,calm and tranquil under his wings. He is the Lord who can channelise tremendous energy in the right constructive path. The holy Ganges represents purity.
So Lord Shiva is the source of all purity. He absorbs all the negativity and lets purity flow into everything.! SHIVOHAM
