“O Sita, consort of Lord Rama, originator, sustainer, and destroyer of the universe, remover of sorrows, and bestower of all that is auspicious, I bow to you.”
Sita Navami, also known as Janaki Navami, is celebrated on the ninth day (Navami) of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase) of the month of Vaishakh. According to religious scriptures, this is the day when Mother Sita incarnated on Earth. On this very day, under the Pushya Nakshatra, King Janak, desiring a child, began preparations for a yajna by plowing the land in Punoura village of Sitamarhi district in Bihar (which was once part of the Mithila kingdom). While tilling the land, he discovered a baby girl embedded in the earth.
Since the land and the plough (known as “Sita”) are associated with this, the child was named Sita. Her Mythological Birth Stories: In the Ramayana, Goddess Sita is also referred to as “Janaki” (daughter of Janak) and “Maithili” (princess of Mithila). She is believed to be an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi and was married to Lord Rama, son of King Dasharatha of Ayodhya and an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Sita accompanied Rama during his 14-years’ exile. According to some legends, she is considered the adopted daughter of King Janak, while other accounts suggest she was Ravana’s daughter.
First Story – As per Valmiki Ramayana: Once, a severe drought struck Mithila. King Janak, troubled by this, was advised by a sage to conduct a yajna and prepare the land for it. While ploughing the land after the yajna, he found a beautiful girl in a golden box emerging from the earth. Being childless, King Janak adopted her and named her “Sita.”
Second Story – Connection with Ravana: According to another legend, Sita was the daughter of King Ravana of Lanka and his wife Mandodari. It is believed that she was the reincarnation of a woman named Vedavati. Vedavati was performing penance to attain Lord Vishnu as her husband. One day, Ravana saw her, became infatuated, and misbehaved with her. In response, she immolated herself and cursed Ravana that she would be born as his daughter and become the cause of his death. Due to this curse, when Mandodari gave birth to a daughter, Ravana cast the child into the sea. The sea goddess handed her over to Mother Earth, who later gave the child to King Janak and Queen Sunayana. King Janak raised her and eventually got her married to Lord Rama. During the exile, Sita was abducted by Ravana, and in the end, Rama defeated and killed Ravana, making Sita the reason for Ravana’s destruction.
What is the truth and which story is real? Only Lord Rama knows.
Nonetheless, Mother Sita is worshipped everywhere. May the blessings of Mother Sita and Lord Rama bring happiness, prosperity, and well-being to all
